Weltcup 6 in Astrachan
Vom 10. bis 24. Mai findet in Astrachan die sechste Station des Weltcups statt. Das Teilnehmerfeld erreicht mit einem Eloschnitt von 2730 erstmals die Kategorie XX und ist damit stärker besetzt als die fünf vorausgegangenen Veranstaltungen. Schachrijar Mamedjarow startet als Elofavorit. Levon Aronjan steht bereits als Gesamtsieger der Weltcupserie statt. Der Zweitplatzierte erwirbt ebenso das Recht auf die Teilnahme an den Kandidatenwettkämpfen.

Pawel Eljanow feiert den größten Sieg in seiner Karriere und gewinnt das Weltcupturnier in Astrachan mit einem ganzen Punkt Vorsprung. Damit müsste sich Teimour Radjabow als Zweitplatzierter der Gesamtserie für die Kandidatenmatches qualifiziert haben.

Allgemeine Informationen zum Weltcup
Ein Zyklus umfasst sechs Turniere, jeder Teilnehmer muss vier Turniere bestreiten.
Der Gesamtsieger qualifiziert sich für die nächste Weltmeisterschaft.
Teilnahmeberechtigt sind zum einen die Führenden der Eloliste, zum anderen
erhalten die Organisatoren der einzelnen Austragungsländer Freiplätze.
Anand, Kramnik, Morosewitsch und Topalow haben verzichtet.
Die Fide hat während der Schacholympiade in Dresden die Modalitäten
des nächsten WM-Zyklus geändert, diese betreffen auch den laufenden
Weltcup. Aus Protest gegen diese Änderungen eines laufenden Zyklus haben
sich Magnus Carlsen und Michael Adams aus dem Weltcup zurückgezogen.
Ursprünglich war Doha als Austragungsort des dritten Weltcups geplant,
diese Stadt hat ebenso wie Montreux die Veranstaltung an die Fide zurückgegeben.
Als Ersatz sprang einmal mehr Elista und neu Naltschik ein. Bestraft wurden
dabei Yannick Pelletier und Mohamad al-Modiakhi. Beide nahmen mit einem Ausrichterplatz
bereits an einem Weltcupturnier teil und beide wurden aus dem Zyklus nun ausgeschlossen.
